Doug's Mental Meanderings

Apr 10 2012

Well, my Jeopardy! run is over.

But not without earning the title of CHAMPION, and earning a pre-tax total of $14,400!

What an amazing experience. AND I was part of the episode with the somewhat infamous “Who Ice T”, so perhaps I’ll be on YouTube forever.

(P.S. Anne was totally awesome IRL, and while I’m bummed she lost a lot of money on that answer, I’m (a) glad I won and (b) hoping the internet infamy makes up for it!)

I’m on Jeopardy! in FIVE days!

Just FIVE more days; it airs Monday night! I feel like it’s been an eternity since I taped…I cannot wait to see it on TV!

A special message from our friend, Dante Shepherd:
Bone marrow donors are always needed in response to blood diseases like leukemia. Unfortunately, it’s not a simple case of matching blood types, but needing to find a much more exact match between donor and recipient - which is an even larger problem when the number of people on donor registration lists never encompasses enough people to have matches for everyone. The other problem is that it’s not cheap to register donors, either - conducting the analysis so you can properly be added to the lists can cost as much as $100 - so there aren’t always many registration drives that you can take part in.
My Eagle project, back when I was a Boy Scout, was to organize a bone marrow donor registration drive, partly inspired by a Scout in our troop who had died unable to find a match. I’ve been trying to figure out how to use STW to organize a new drive for a while now - a little hard when you can’t all just come down to a local building we’re having it at! - a nice idea but certainly with difficulties before we even get to the costs.
BUT - and this is good news - the National Marrow Donor Program is actually having all costs covered until the end of January. Even better, you can sign up online - it takes less than ten minutes to fill out the forms, you’ll be mailed a cheek-swabbing kit which you mail back - and bam, you’re done and registered, and it was free. So please, if you can, register to be a donor before the month is over. You may never end up being a match for someone - but every person who gets registered helps cut down on the possibility that someone won’t be able to find a match.
If you’re between 18 and 60, please consider becoming registered as a potential donor. It’s a great opportunity to do something easy, and you might end up saving a life someday. Thanks.

I’d love to, except my being gay apparently also means my marrow isn’t good enough. When will we abandon these archaic policies grounded in late 80s fearmongering?

A friend is having people over for dinner tonight

I’ve volunteered to help with the cooking (though am not sure yet if she’ll take me up on it). I figured big group dinners = make lots of pasta. My top two picks for recipes are bucatini with bacon sauce and fettucini carbonara. Hmmm…

Anyone have good pasta recipe suggestions for large groups (10-12)?

YOU FUCKING GUYS

WATCH THIS SHIT

CNN, EXPLAIN YOURSELF

It’s like you can literally see people in a control room scrambling to pull out some feed wires the moment he starts criticizing foreign policy on live tv..

Holy shit that was hilarious.

This needs to go viral

ROFL

So brilliant.

Is there any follow up or explanation available somewhere? Because that’s some conspiracy-level hijinx right there.

Wow! They cut off a soldier as soon as he had an opinion about the war.

WHOAWHOAWHOA.

I also love the reporter’s “But you have a 9/11 Never Forget tattoo on your neck; what do you mean you’re capable of a nuanced evaluation of our foreign policy?” line of questioning. Classy.

Why I’m in California

Thankfully I don’t have to keep this big ol’ secret anymore.

Remember wayyyy back in February when I auditioned to be on Jeopardy!? Well, I passed the test. And I got to the in-person audition, and on November 7 they plucked me out of oblivion and decided I should be on the show.

Well, today was taping day, and it was the TIME. OF. MY. LIFE. I of course can’t tell you how I did, but I can tell you that you should watch Jeopardy! on Monday, April 9, 2012 to see for yourself.

Absolutely, hands down, the most exciting thing I’ve ever done. I’m excited to share the moment with all of my friends in a few months!

Back to 200…

I’ve been really lazy over the last few weeks (read: like 7 weeks) and did what I said I’d never do…let my weight get above 200. I hit max around 207. I’ve been very diligent the last week and a half or so though and am now 201.

Need to drop 1 more pound (and change) to get back under 200, and 4 more pounds to get to 197 which is the goal for my vacation. I leave for California on Saturday!

So…

I just bought a new car. In light of my recent car troubles, it was something we thought was worth doing. And today we pulled the trigger on it.

And…I’m kind of really excited. I pick it up on Wednesday!
